“A SOC 2 audit is a second type of SOC assessment of the internal controls at a service organization that protect client data. The SOC 2 audit was designed to determine if service organizations are compliant with the principles of security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy.

This is also known as the Trust Services Criteria (TSC), which is a criterion to help control testimonial and consulting engagements to gauge and assess controls over information and systems:

• across an entire entity
• at a subsidiary, division, or operating unit level
• within a function relevant to the entity’s operational, reporting, or compliance objectives
• for a particular type of information used by the entity

There are two types of SOC 2 audits – SOC 2 Type I and SOC 2 Type II. Both report on the non-financial reporting controls and processes at a service organization that protect client data. Despite their similarities, the key difference between them is timing.

This report is an attestation of controls at a service organization at a specific point in time. This report also attests that controls are designed and implemented successfully.

This report is an attestation of controls at a service organization over a minimum six-month period. Not only does SOC 2 Type II attesting the controls on design and implementation, it also verifies operating effectiveness.
